Mickey 17: A Surrealist Sci-Fi Masterpiece

mickey 17

Main Characters:

  • Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson): An “expendable” employee who is cloned every time he dies on a mission.
  • Nasha (Naomi Ackie): A technician and Mickey’s only tether to his humanity.
  • Timo (Steven Yeun): Mickey’s friend who provides much of the dark, existential humor.

The Review:

Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 is quite possibly the most “Critics Canvas” movie on this list. It is weird, dark, and deeply funny. Robert Pattinson continues his streak of choosing roles that allow him to be absolutely bizarre, playing multiple versions of himself with subtle, hilarious nuances.

The premise—dying for a living—is handled with a “grunge” sensibility. The colony on Niflheim feels lived-in, dirty, and decaying. It’s a critique of corporate greed and human value wrapped in a high-concept sci-fi shell. The visual effects are top-tier, but it’s the philosophical questions that stick with you. What makes “you,” you? When Mickey 17 meets Mickey 18, the film turns into a surrealist comedy of errors that only Bong Joon-ho could pull off. It’s a must-watch for anyone tired of the “safe” blockbuster.

Viewer Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) – Bizarre, brilliant, and utterly unique.
